TALLADEGA, Ala. (
WBRC
) – Governor Kay Ivey has

enacted the Focus Act as legislation

This implies that your students will not be permitted to use cell phones or any wireless devices within public school premises.

This legislation provides students with an environment that emphasizes education, reducing potential diversions in the classroom.

Dr. Quentin Lee, the superintendent of Talladega City Schools, states that this new legislation aligns with his current efforts, emphasizing a return to prioritizing education.

“It offers our educators additional time for individualized instruction with our students; eliminating that obstacle,” stated Lee.

Superintendent Lee states that he anticipated the state would enact this legislation. The school district under his management already has a regulation prohibiting cell phones and personal devices both on school buses and in classrooms.

“The educators can explore their most innovative ideas without having to vie for attention against mobile devices. Every student has access to a Chromebook, ensuring constant internet connectivity. Provided these devices are used according to the lessons outlined by the instructors, we see no issue with this usage,” stated Lee.

Dr. Lee emphasizes that with an emphasis on learning, students become better equipped at mapping out their futures and making informed decisions about what comes after they graduate from high school.

“Our senior class was able to receive over $8 million of scholarship offers, and you may be thinking that’s not real money, but it’s real opportunities. Our students have the opportunity to go to the school of their choosing, not necessarily the school that they have to go to,” said Lee.

Dr. Lee says he want the parents’ support in enforcing this new policy because it benefits their child.

We aim to ensure that our parents understand this is a policy and these are the procedures we have established to gain their support for our actions aimed at meeting the needs of their children. We aren’t attempting to complicate matters; rather, we must prioritize what truly matters above all else—learning and education.

Dr. Quentin Lee says the no cell phone bill is working in his school system and he doesn’t foresee the rule being a problem during the 2025 school year.
